The Story
After 3 years of web development, I'm rebuilding my very first website:
- You have to start somewhere: creating a first website using pure HTML.
- Then realizing that adding a database to easily update information is a good idea... and turning the HTML into PHP.
- Discovering that to expose a site to the world, you need to use a hosting provider.
- Using Hostinger seemed like a good idea: simple interface, attractive price for the first year... but the second year, it’s at least €12 per month 😅.
- Moving to OVH hosting and discovering the joys of VM administration, the Debian OS, containers, and above all the autonomy it brings!
- After a year of the site being online, wanting to make changes… and realizing it’s not so easy anymore to touch that very first PHP site.
- After three years of use and many canoe rentals made possible by this site for my kayak club, I am fully redeveloping it with Next.js, a Baserow database, and hosting it on Vercel (for €0 per month 🔥).
Thinking back to those sleepless nights building my first site... and today being able to rebuild it in just one day, I’m really happy I pursued a degree in computer engineering!
